Leadership

We organised a Creative Leadership Retreat last week. The programme was attended by senior managers from both public and private sectors, a small focused group.

There are several take away lessons to be brought back by the participants. First, unlike in traditional hierarchies, autocratic leaders are no more relevant in a networked or social organisations.

In reality, some leaders are too arrogant, they enjoyed being a celebrity like CEO, always in the limelight and gave instructions from the comfort of their offices. They often ignored or downplayed contributions made by his/her followers. But they forget that the world has changed.

Remember a classic New Yorker cartoon with Rover sitting in front of a computer? which read, “On the Internet, no one knows you’re a dog.” On the web, no one knows or cares you’re a senior manager either. Leadership today is simply the reciprocal of followership.

New leaders need to adopt a down to earth strategy, humble, be more appreciative, listen more, and give everyone the chance to lead if they are capable...money and technology are nothing compared to the "natural resource"...people that shared the values and principles of common good...a leader is nothing without good followers...a great reminder for us all...wallahuaklam
