Relevant

Over the last few years I have delivered keynote speeches at several international conferences. One of my favourite topics was 'Research that Matters', about the importance of balancing between the academic rigour and practical relevance.

At one of the business and management conferences I asked the participants one question. Whether they read any of business magazines like Malaysian Business, Business Today, The Economist, Harvard Business Review or Global Focus.

I also asked whether they read any of business newspapers like The Financial Daily, The Edge Weekly, The Malaysia Reserve, Focus Malaysia. Less than ten percent raised up their hands. So I then asked how relevant is our research to the practice.

Many may disagree with me but that is what I believe. Being relevant is important especially in the areas of business and management. How our research have impacted the way people live, work and behave (read businesses as well).

Read the OECD report below. Despite its negativity, I believe things have improved significantly over the last few years. Various efforts done by the Ministry and universities have started to bear fruits. Being relevant is one of the slogans now.

Though more efforts will need to be done, we should be proud of the recent achievements. Engagement and trust from the industry is also important. Let us now work harder for the nation that we love.
