Accepting Challenges, Moving Forward

We are facing two main challenges in our pursuit for excellence.

Firstly, our researches are currently skewed towards academic. So, we need to find a right balance between academic rigour and practical relevance. The concept of quadraple helix could be used as a guiding principle. It is important for us to reflect how the existence of our institution, a management focused university could provide significant contributions to industry, government and community. It is timely for us to work hand-in-hand with our partners from industry, government and community; to synergise our resources and focus on long-term, disruptive and upstream researches and case studies that will change the way people live, behave and work for the well-being of our nation. If we could deliver this, opportunities for more training and consultation works will come naturally.

Secondly, while the number of academic researches and publications have increased dramatically over the last few years, there is still much work to be carried out to improve the quality of our research. In the first phase of our strategic plan, we want to increase the number of researches and publications. Alhamdulillah, we have achieved that. In the second phase, we want to increase the number of scopus-indexed publications. We are half-way through and we believe we can achieve that too. Next challenge is to increase the quality of scopus-indexed publications. We begin to focus on Q1 and Q2 journals. We also talk about increasing the number of citations, which could be achieved via quality publications, that come from high quality researches. Slowly, we would gain respect and recognition, not only from our local, but also regional and global academic peers.

Thus, the university believes one better way to achieve the agenda is via the establishment of CoE. We hope the new 22 S-CoEs and 31 RUs plus 6 U-CoEs would be able to assist UUM in achieving its vision to become an eminent management university.
