We normally give a good rating to a 6-star hotel such as Mandarin Oriental. The room is superb, service is excellent and the foods are simply delicious. Understandably, we would give a poor rating to a 3-star hotel like Silka Maytower. The room is smelly, service is poor and the foods are simply rubbish. On average, on a scale of 1 to 5, we may give a perfect score of 5 to MO while Maytower may get 1 or 2 at best. One thing people often forget to consider when making such a direct comparison is the price paid, RM1000/night for a standard room at MO compared to RM130/night for Maytower. Should we normalize the price probably the result will be different.
The same goes to education. Remember when I visited IMD in 2009. The facilities are superb. Few professors I met are mostly brilliant. The support staff are efficient and informative. The foods are marvellous and free to students, buffet for both lunch and dinner. Also plenty of free flow coffee, biscuits, chocolates etc anytime of the day. The same situation when I attended Executive Training at Kellogg School of Management in 2014. However, one year MBA at IMD costs CHF60,000 (RM244,800) and at Kellogg USD54,000 (RM210,600). MBA fees at Malaysian public university range from RM16,000-RM25,000. The quality of students are also different, not only professors. So how do we calculate the ROI? Salary increment, promotion, better jobs etc?
Notes from Silka Maytower. After normalizing the score I give it 4.5/5 compared to MO 4.2/5 ha3
