Soul

When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy - Rumi Jalaludin

We are Proud...

We are proud...

We are proud of the amount of grants we have secured
We are also proud of the number of research we have completed

But...have we ever thought about

How and what we have spent the money for...
How our research have benefited the stakeholders...our students, our institution, our community, our nation

We are proud...

We are proud of the number of papers we have presented at international conferences
We are also very proud of the number of articles we have published, the number of citations and impact factors we have collected

But...have we ever thought about

How have our trips benefited others besides ourselves...
Who have read those articles other than our fellow academicians, if they do...

We are proud...

We are proud of the school we have graduated from, our doctorate degree and the title Dr preceding our names
We are also proud of being an associate professor, professor or emeritus professor

But...have we ever thought about

How little the knowledge we actually have that should make us more humble...
How much we have contributed to our stakeholders since...

We are proud...

We are proud of the various positions we hold
We are also proud of the decision-making power we possess

But...have we ever thought about

How big the responsibility on our shoulder are...
How fair are we in making decisions...

We are proud...

We are proud of the number of students we have taught, supervised and trained
We are also proud of the quality of the programmes we have offered

But...have we ever thought about

How many of our students leave us transformed...
How many of our programmes are relevant to the needs of our stakeholders...

Maybe...

Maybe it is about time for us to reflect and ponder...

Are we doing the right things...and are we doing the things right...

Are we still relevant...are we being responsible...are we being referred to...

Purpose

Sense of urgency without the sense of purpose will bring us nowhere. Sense of purpose without the sense of urgency will leave us behind.

Ant and the Tiger

A Corporate Story:

Every day, a small 🐜 Ant arrives  at work very early and starts work immediately.

🐜 She produces  a lot and she was happy.

The Chief, 🐯 a Tiger, was surprised  to see that 🐜 the Ant was working without supervision.

🐯  He thought if the 🐜 Ant can produce so  much without supervision, wouldn’t she produce even more if she had a supervisor!

So 🐯 he recruited a 🐝 Bee who had extensive experience as πŸ‘· supervisor and who was  famous for πŸ“ writing  excellent reports.

The 🐝 Bee’s first decision was to set up a  πŸ”” clocking in attendance system.

πŸ He also needed a secretary to help him write and type his reports and he  recruited a πŸ‡Rabbit , who managed the archives and monitored ☎ all phone calls.

🐯 The Tiger was delighted with the 🐝 Bee's reports and asked him to produce πŸ“Š graphs  to describe production rates and to analyse  πŸ“‰ trends, so that he could use them for πŸ“ presentations at Board‘s meetings.

So the 🐝 Bee had to buy a πŸ’» new computer and a  Laser printer and recruited a 🐈 Cat to manage the 🌐 IT department.

The🐜 Ant, who had once been so productive and relaxed, hated this new plethora of paperwork  and meetings which used up most of her time…!

πŸ―  The Tiger came to the conclusion that it was high time to nominate a person in charge of the department where the 🐜 Ant worked.

The position was given to the πŸ’ Monkey, whose first decision was to buy an Air Conditioner and an ergonomic πŸ’Ί chair for his office.

The new person in charge, πŸ’ the Monkey, also needed a πŸ’» computer and a personal assistant , who he brought from his previous department, to help him prepare a πŸ“‘ Work and πŸ“ƒ 'Budget Control Strategic Optimisation Plan' …

The Department where the 🐜 Ant works is now a sad place, where nobody laughs anymore  and everybody has become upset...

It was at that time that the 🐝 Bee convinced the boss, 🐯  the Tiger; of the absolute necessity  to start a climatic study of the environment .

Having reviewed  the  charges  for running the 🐜 Ant’s department , the 🐯 Tiger  found out that  the Production   was much less than  before.

So he recruited the 🐀 Owl, a prestigious and renowned consultant to carry out an  audit and  suggest solutions.

πŸ€ The Owl spent three months  in the department and came up with an enormous report, in several volumes, that concluded...

       “The Department is overstaffed..."

Guess who the 🐯 Tiger fires first?

          Of course, 🐜 the Ant.........,

"....because she showed lack of motivation and had a negative attitude. " The Company went bankrupt six months later.

                  ***********
"The Characters in this fable are fictitious; any resemblance to real people or  facts within the Corporation is pure coincidence only…"

Be Different

I do not easily get excited with new things. Particularly if we have to do things because we do not want to be left behind. By merely following what others are doing, we will remain as a good follower without our own strength that we can be proud of. I believe building up our own strength, though it may take time, is more rewarding than being proud of being a good follower. Saying I am following what Harvard and MIT are doing may sound good. How about I am doing something different that not even Harvard or MIT are doing it and it works well. Sometimes we are easily get extracted with what others are doing. We then end up doing too many things and forget our own core things. You need to be strong and courages to be different. Focus and do what you believe. Anyway that is what innovation is all about, at least from my perspective. Be different be stubborn and lead

Live a Life

Watched an interesting video. A street reporter asked a question about life to a guy 'on acid' and he gave quite an inspirational speech...

To live in a mystery and to find purpose...

Live in a moment and don't judge people...

You can't be free if you judge people...

You always doing what is in your heart...

You can't get away from your heart bcos life is a paradox, its a mirror of confusion...

So love now...

Some interesting points from a guy on acid if you know what acid means ha3

Busy

Have we ever asked ourselves these simple questions:

are we really that busy?
do we really need to travel that often?
do we really need to do that many 'things'?
are we really serious with what we are doing?
do we really need to have/attend all those meetings?

Sometimes I think doing 'less' can be more productive

Effort

It is not the result but effort that matters. Better still effort that comes with a good result. If not now but with good effort the result will eventually come. Yes some said many successful people are drop outs. One thing they forget to mention is that successsful dropped outs all have the right attitude and are hard working species. More importantly, they dropped out from top universities like Harvard, MIT and the likes, and not because of failure but its their own decision to quit and pursue a higher personal agenda. The key is attitude that will determine the altitude. So do your best at what you want to be and good at
